The cardboard packaging imposes, even more, when the NAS is in front of us. This Synology DS2419 + is a beautiful beast of 12 berries! As you can see, this NAS is first and foremost for the most demanding users and consumers of data and businesses.
From synchronization to collaboration
If we look at the specifications of the NAS, we find an Atom C3538 4 cores at 2.1 GHz, 4 GB of memory (DDR4), expandable up to 32 GB (2×16 GB), 12 bays for hard drives / SSD formats 2.5 and 3.5 inches. In all, we can align 168 TB of storage …, 4 1 Gb Ethernet ports, 2 USB 3 connectors, a PCIe Gen 3 port, 2 fans, a 500W power supply. If the NAS is bulky, it weighs -10 kg (without disks), which is rather a pleasant surprise.
Heavy, nothing but heavy!
The DS2419 +, you’ll understand, it’s heavy. Naturally, it integrates the home OS, IU DSM. You can interface the NAS with cloud storage services. This is ideal for creating your backup plans on x sites. You can also use snapshot functions to replicate data and manage sites in case of problems.
As we are in a business context, the NAS will be able to integrate into your virtual infrastructure for your virtual machines, via Virtual Machine Manager. Only VMM Pro supports high availability, live migration. Synology does it right: VMM integrates into the DSM environment. Even if you are not an expert in VMs and Clusters, the GUI makes it easy to administer, create and manage VMs.
The NAS, the cornerstone of the digital enterprise
If you want high-performance networking, you can install a 10GbE Ethernet PCIe card. Note that the 4 Ethernet ports allow redundant operation of the NAS in case of a problem on a network. If you need to expand the NAS you can connect, via the dedicated port on the back, the extension DX1215 (12 bay).
The NAS comes without a drive and there are not many accessories that come with it: the power cable, Ethernet cable, screws (to secure the drives to the brackets), a pair of keys, and a small boot guide. It will not be too far away from the UPS housing, the power cable is a standard length.
For the choice of disks (brand, density) and be sure of the proper functioning of the server, we advise you to consult the list of compatible hard disks on the Synology website. For our part, we opted for WD RED 4 TB. The RED range is dedicated to NAS and is suitable for intensive use 24/7. Preferably choose server or NAS disks. The installation is very simple:
The administration part
What we have always liked about Synology is the handling of the administration. And with this new model, we are on familiar ground: http://find.synology.com (of course, the NAS and your machines are on the same network.) I know it’s stupid to say it, but sometimes we lose hours to understand).
It only takes a few seconds for the web console to see the NAS. We connect, we validate the conditions of use. We configure our NAS: We install DSM (the administration tool) and format the disks. If the seer’s quiver, it’s a good sign! The operation is automated and takes a few minutes. Of course, the more records you have, and the bigger the capacity, the more time it takes.
Synology DSM system interface
If you already know DSM, again, no surprises. You have access to hardware management, disks, volume management and especially backup and server services that can be deployed on the NAS. The monitoring is very complete and allows to see all the metrics of the NAS and the possible problems. To set up RAID, the operation takes a few minutes through the Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) which allows you to create RAID volumes on multiple disks.
The package center, the Synology App Store, gives you access to dozens of additional modules. Some features of the constructor are not installed by default, you will need to install and deploy them yourself, for example, Virtual Machine Manager.
If one of the disks is degraded or you remove it hot, DSM sees it immediately. It will then restore (or repair) the volume to recover the smooth operation. Warning: If you remove a disk from the wild, you degrade the volume and the storage group. In the extreme case, the drive will be seen as broken down. It will then repair or redo the group.
Tips: It is recommended to install at least 6 disks / SSDs in order to benefit from the optimal operation. To prevent accidental opening of a rack, lock each rack with the key. Ergonomics: the fan panel can be removed very easily. Thus, it is easy to clean the blades and the ventilation grilles. This is important because this area tends to get dirty. Clean ventilation avoids forcing on the engines.
The DiskStation DS2419 + is a good Synology. It is in line with previous models. The construction is clean. The design does not change. We would have liked bays made of higher quality materials. The absence of a control screen is not a problem, everything is managed via the web console or for sysadmins, you can use the console port.
The DSM part is as always pleasant even if the grip takes a few hours if you do not know.
We are pleasantly surprised by the sound level. In “normal” use, the NAS understands little. Of course, if the DS2419 + is charged, the fans will run at full speed. Via DSM, you can configure the operating level. Do not forget to install it in a sufficiently ventilated place and not too hot. If the room is hot, ventilation will attempt to compensate. The DS2419 + is positioned as a NAS for small and medium businesses. It will adapt to the needs and the 12 bays leave room for improvement. A connection Thunderbolt 3 would have been a plus, as well as a physical security system.
